The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) has published the results of its survey, conducted by YouGov, on whether British businesses feel they are well-equipped with supporting women going through the menopause at their workplace. The poll found that 33% of employers did not feel well-equipped, 46% did feel well-equipped, and 21% did not know. Acas also asked businesses whether they felt confident that managers in their organisation have the necessary skills to support staff experiencing symptoms of the menopause, whereby 37% of employers did not feel confident, 46% did feel confident, and 17% did not know.
Acas advises employers to:
- progress a menopause policy which outlines the affects of the menopause and the support available to them
- develop awareness training on the menopause for managers
- help staff manage symptoms of the menopause via practical changes at work—e.g. making cold drinking water available and having temperature control.
Chief executive of Acas, Susan Clews, commented: ‘There is still a stigma attached to the menopause and our findings show that some employers do not feel well equipped to support women that are going through it.’
