The government has announced that it will not introduce mandatory ethnic pay reporting due to ‘significant statistical and data issues’. The government is expected to provide guidance for employers choosing to report ethnicity pay gaps, particularly for employers in regions with low numbers of people from ethnic minorities. Action 16 of the government’s Inclusive Britain policy paper states that this guidance will be published this summer and will include case studies from companies already reporting.
Chair of the Women and Equalities Committee, Caroline Nokes, said, ‘The Government’s nonsensical response which claims that gathering the necessary data would be too difficult, and then promptly outlines how this could easily be addressed is disappointing. It makes clear that what is lacking in this administration is not resource or know-how, but the will or care to foster a fairer and more equal society’.
